Life in San Francisco can mean you’re working on your latest business idea one second, trying the latest gastronomical wonder the next, then stuck in horrible traffic, then … feeling completely drained. Lucky for us, the hefty rents also come with the ability to be at the beach or in the mountains after just a quick drive. But if you’re like us, fun and relaxation needs to be accompanied by our BFFs, our dogs. Our team shares our favorite dog-friendly weekend getaways in the Bay Area. All of them are BYOD (bring your own dog!).
Distance from San Francisco: 227 miles
Why here? If you and your dog are craving some sand beneath your paws, head to Cayucos for a relaxing beach getaway. The three-hour drive is well worth it for the delicious (dog-friendly) eats and beach walks.
Where to stay: The Cayucos Beach Inn welcomes up to two dogs of any size for an additional fee of $15 per dog/per night. In addition to all rooms being dog-friendly, the inn is a quick walk from the dog-friendly beaches and offers amenities like a dog washing station and dog treats at the front office.
Where to eat: Beach-front dining, dog-friendly patio, and great food—this is what you can expect at Skipper’s restaurant. You can also expect a water bowl and dog treat for dogs of any shape or size.
What to do: If you enjoy long, leash-free walks on the beach, head to Cayucos Beach for the day.
Distance from San Francisco: 126 miles
Why here? Similarly to Cayucos, you’ll want to head to Gualala if you’re looking for a chill weekend getaway. Not to mention, Gualala Point Park offers leashed hiking trails if you’re not the beach kind.
Where to stay: Luxury meets dog-friendly at the Sea Ranch Lodge. All dogs are welcomed with a cushy dog bed, cookies, filtered water and bowl, and dog-friendly cover sheets to protect furniture. They also offer a canine concierge with suggestions for you and your pup. They will accept up to two dogs per room for a one time fee of $75 per dog.
Where to eat: When it comes to dog-friendly eateries in Gualala, think Trinks Cafe. This restaurant is open for breakfast and lunch—and dinner three nights a week. You can expect diner food and a dog-friendly patio.
What to do: There are miles of walking trails and dog-friendly beach access, but be sure to check out the beautiful and dog-friendly Blind Beach in Sonoma Coast State Park.
Distance from San Francisco: 47 miles
Why here? Inverness is the perfect destination for a quick trip out of the city. While you could definitely do Inverness as a day trip, there are many reasons why you should consider making a weekend of it.
Where to stay: The spacious grounds surrounding the Cottages at Point Reyes Seashoremake it ideal for dog-friendly lodging. All four-legged guests are greeted with a dog bed, fenced-in dog run, and “biobags” for a fee of $20 per night.
Where to eat: Whether you are on your way or returning from the beach, Cafe Reyes is a casual and dog-friendly place to stop for a snack and a few cold ones. Pups are welcome to sit with you in the outdoor seating area while you enjoy their selection of wood-fired pizzas.
What to do: Head to Kehoe beach in Point Reyes National Seashore where you’ll find one of three pet-friendly beaches and the only dog-friendly trail in the park. While pets must be on a leash at the beach, there is plenty of room to hang out and interact with other pups.
